The Office of Film and Literature Classification is the Government body responsible for classifying publications that may need to be restricted or banned. The legal definition of a 'publication' covers a wide range of mediums such as films, videos, music recordings, books, magazines and computer games.
New Zealand society is protected from the harm caused by the unrestricted availability of restricted and objectionable publications.
We will achieve this by balancing the values inherent in freedom of expression with the need to protect society from injury.
These statistics are taken from the Office's Annual Report for 2009.
You can also download a PDF of the Annual Report.
